NBC News obtained a recording of the conversation of firefighters who responded to the scene of Heche’s car. The footage shows how the intense fire and smoke conditions made it even more challenging to rescue Heche from his burning car and it took 45 minutes before they could begin rescue efforts.

“Given the severe fire and smoke conditions, it wasn’t because you could see clearly into the vehicle or could clearly access it,” a Los Angeles police department representative told the publication.

“Dense smoke conditions, heavy fire conditions, which made it difficult for us to see each other in the interior of the working structure fire,” he added.
