Another ship in the Red Sea has been attacked by a suspected Yemen Houthi rebel drone

A ship passing through the southern Red Sea was attacked by Yemeni Houthi rebel drones early Tuesday, authorities said, the latest attack in their campaign to target ships in connection with Israel’s war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The attack took place west of the Yemeni port of Hodeida, and the projectile caused “slight damage” to the ship’s window on the bridge, the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said.

A small vessel was near the ship before the attack, he added.

Private security firm Ambrey identified the vessel as a Barbados-flagged cargo ship belonging to the United Kingdom.

No one was injured aboard the ship, which sustained “minor damage,” the firm said.

Later, the spokesman for the Iran-backed Houthi rebel forces, Brig. General Yahya Saree claimed in a statement that rebel forces attacked two separate ships, one American and one British, in the Red Sea.

He provided no evidence to support the claim.

One of the ships the Houthis claimed to have attacked, the Morning Tide, matched the details provided by Ambrey.

Tracking data showed it was in the Red Sea near the reported attack.

The Morning Tide’s owner, British firm Furadino Shipping, told The Associated Press that no one was injured in the attack and that the ship was on its way to Singapore.

Since November, rebels have repeatedly targeted ships in the Red Sea over Israel’s offensive in Gaza against Hamas.

But they often target ships with weak or unclear ties to Israel, endangering shipping on key trade routes between Asia, the Middle East and Europe.

In recent weeks, the United States and the United Kingdom, backed by other allies, have launched airstrikes targeting the Houthis’ missile arsenal and launch sites for their attacks.

The US and Britain struck 36 Houthi targets in Yemen on Saturday.

Airstrikes on Friday in Iraq and Syria targeted other Iran-backed militias and Iran’s Revolutionary Guard in retaliation for a drone strike that killed three US soldiers in Jordan.

The US military’s Central Command separately acknowledged Monday’s attack on the Houthis, in which they attacked what they described as two Houthi drone boats loaded with explosives.

The US military “determines they present an imminent threat to US Navy ships and merchant vessels in the region,” the military said. “This action will protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for US Navy ships and merchant vessels.”
