Anthony Anderson recently hosted the “It’s Okay Not To Be Okay” Black Tie and Sneaker Gala by Roll with the Punches Foundation. During the event, the actor spoke with People’s Magazine about why she agreed to host the gala and the important role mental health plays in her life.

He said, “I have a half-brother that I don’t have a relationship with — because we don’t know each other — who has mental issues. And unfortunately, he is no longer here with us.” Anderson said her relationship with her half-brother was one of the factors that pushed her to become a mental health advocate.

The actor continued, “And now that he’s gone, I’m like, ‘Well, you know, maybe I should have stepped up earlier than today and done something about it.’ So that’s why I’m here to help bring awareness to it because, in the African-American community, it’s something that we don’t talk about. And I’m here to say it’s okay to not be good. We’re here for you.”

Anderson was also asked if she thinks Hollywood needs to talk more about mental health issues. The 52-year-old actor said having a “conversation, a dialogue,” is important, especially in the Black community.

He says, “We’ve all grown up where aunts and uncles or family members lived in the basement or lived in the back room that never really came out. We never talked about it because of that issue.”

Anderson insists that it’s time to “bring awareness” to the community and let those who were previously shunned know that “it’s okay.” He said people with mental illness need to know they are not lepers and that there is a family and community for them.

Anderson also discussed the cultural trend of canceling celebrities on social media at the event. He said it was “unfortunate” for various groups of people to be “offended by people’s opinions” and that he understood the anger.

The “Black-ish” star said, “I’m not a comedian. I’m a comedian, so I don’t go on stage and tell jokes and things like that, but we have to be aware of other people’s feelings and the transitions they go through and things like that.”

Anderson explains that as long as comedians aren’t attacking anyone, their jokes and skits usually come from a “place of humor” or a “place of pain.” He said it was also sometimes just their observations, which “could be misinterpreted and so on,” but they always tried to be respectful.

Earlier this year, Anderson tackled another societal issue, the Ozempic weight loss trend that went viral in Hollywood. Ozempic is the market name for Semaglutide, a drug mainly used to test Type 2 diabetes. It was recently approved as Wegovy, a drug to treat obesity, which increased its popularity.

When Anderson arrived at the annual Big Game Big Give event, he spoke to her People’s Magazine and said he hopes “this trend will stop.” In 2002, the “Hustle & Flow” star famously was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and has been open about her struggles.

He said, “I will say this, it creates a shortage for those of us who need the medicine that we need and not for weight loss, but for our health.”
