Anthony Fauci to testify twice before House panel about COVID response

Former White House chief medical adviser Anthony Fauci will testify twice before a House select subcommittee next year, sitting for transcribed interviews and subsequent public hearings on the federal government’s pandemic response.

“Dr. Fauci is the face of America’s public health response during the COVID-19 pandemic, and his testimony will serve as an important component of the Select Subcommittee’s investigation into the origins of COVID-19, coercive mandates, gain-of-function research, screening science, and more,” said House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio) in a statement.

“The time has come for Dr. Fauci faced the facts and addressed the various controversies that arose during and after the outbreak. Americans deserve trusted public health leaders who put the well-being of our people above any personal or political goals,” he added.

“Thankfully, retirement from public service does not shield one from Congressional scrutiny or accountability to the American people. During the testimony of Dr. Fauci is coming, honesty is non-negotiable.”

The longtime former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) will answer questions for seven hours a day on January 8 and 9, 2024, accompanied by two private lawyers and two government lawyers.

Fauci will also attend a public hearing to be announced later, according to a letter sent to his attorney.

The House COVID subcommittee released emails earlier this year indicating that Fauci had “instigated”, helped edit and given final approval to a research paper aimed at “debunking” the so-called “lab leak” theory about the origin of SARS-CoV- 2.

Study 17 Feb. 2020, published in Nature Medicine, was later used by Fauci to dismiss concerns that the COVID-19 pandemic may have originated in Chinese research laboratories such as the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Other records obtained by the subcommittee show advisers to Fauci may have illegally used personal email accounts to evade Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests about COVID — and also deleted some communications.

Fauci was also secretly welcomed to CIA headquarters to discuss the agency’s investigation into the origins of the outbreak in an effort to “influence” its decisions, according to whistleblower testimony heard by a House panel.

The FBI and the Department of Energy concluded that COVID most likely leaked from a research lab, while the CIA and other intelligence agencies “remain unable to determine the exact origin” of the outbreak, according to a June report.

Former Trump administration official Dr. Robert Kadlec, who handled biodefense issues and outbreak response during the pandemic, recently told Sky News that he believed Fauci’s repeated attempts to divert attention from the so-called “lab leak theory” were deliberate.

The National Institutes of Health and the United States Agency for International Development contributed more than $2 million in grants to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which is conducting gain-of-function research on the bat coronavirus.

Kadlec now says Fauci downplayed the possibility of an accidental leak to hide scrutiny of the grant funding, an effort he also joined to encourage cooperation with the Chinese government.

“Part of the reason I’m still committed to trying to … bring the matter up,” Kadlec told the outlet, “is to at least say that it’s important to know now what’s going on.”
