This isn’t the first time Hopkins has talked about his sobriety and how it started out of desperation. He also previously recalled the moment he decided to get sober in 1975 and shared that an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting saved him.

On Friday, Hopkins shared a video on Instagram wishing his fans and followers a happy New Year. In the same post, he announced that he was celebrating 48 years of alcohol and drug sobriety. The post shows 85-year-old Hopkins standing in a large room as he shoots the video.
In it, he said, “Hello, Happy New Year to all of you! All you revelers and drinkers all be happy. Great! Happy New Year! Have fun. If you’re drunk, remember me. I don’t understand anymore because it’s been 48 years today, I quit. I got help for it, and my life changed. I don’t envy you having fun out there.”
Hopkins also encourages people struggling with addiction to seek professional help. The “Silence of the Lambs” actor concluded with, “But if you need help, there’s time. Life is in session. Work to get it.”

Hundreds of fans, celebrity friends and followers of Hopkins filled the comments section with celebratory messages for her landmark of sobriety and happy new year wishes of their own.
Actor Josh Brolin wrote, “You are THE MAN!!! Love you. and Happy 48th!” And actress Melanie Griffith commented on the various white heart emojis.

This isn’t the first time Hopkins has spoken publicly about his years of sobriety. In an Instagram clip posted in 2022, she said, “I’m a recovering alcoholic, and to you out there, I know there are people struggling in this age of cancellation and hate and no compromise, kids being bullied.”
“Legend of the Fall” continues by sharing encouraging words with addicts and victims of bullying. He said, “I say to this: Be kind to yourself. Do good. Stay out of toxic environments with people if they offend you. Enjoy your life. Be proud of your life.”

During the 2020 interview with The New York TimesHopkins reflected on his decision to stay sober in 1975. He said it began after he woke up in a hotel in Arizona and had no memory of the day or how he got there.
“I thought, ‘Okay, I’ve got to stop this because I’m either going to kill someone or myself.’ My life, from that moment on, took on a new meaning,” Hopkins said.
In 2021, the “Hannibal” actor also revealed to Sunday Times Magazine that attending an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting saved him. From the day of their first meeting, the award-winning actor said: “[I] haven’t had a drink since and I don’t feel the urge to drink either.”
He also said, “When I asked for help and I realized that I was not alone, that there were thousands of people like me, all my fears began to disappear.
