Two-time Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins has scored a new acting role and will step into the gladiatorial arena for his performance.
Since “Westworld,” Hopkins hasn’t had a significant television role in quite some time, but that’s all about to change when he signs on to join the cast of “Those About To Die,” a drama series that will be available on NBC’s universal streaming platform, Peacock.
Anthony Hopkins Joins Roland Emmerich’s Gladiator Series “The Dying”
Daniel Mannix’s eponymous non-fiction book inspired the show and features an ensemble of characters from all parts of Roman society, clashing in sports, politics and business. The “84 Charing Cross Road” actor will play Emperor Vespasian in the drama, which got a straight-to-series order last summer.

His performance will portray the Roman Emperor and leader of the Flavian dynasty, who claimed his throne after victory in a bloody ten-year civil war. However, as he got older, he was “despised by the Patricians who were vying for position in the Empire and wanted to replace the heir to the throne at the first opportunity they got.”
Roland Emmerich, director and executive producer for the series, is joined by AGC Studios to help bring to life the written vision of Oscar-nominated “Saving Private Ryan” writer Robert Rodarte.
According to reports, the Co-finance comes from High End Productions, a recently launched distribution and financing partnership between Herbert Kloiber Sr. and Constantin Entertainment, which has acquired distribution rights in Europe. AGC International represents the remaining worldwide rights and will buy the series in the US, as reported by DEADLINE.
As mentioned, Hopkins has won two Oscars during his career. One is for the performance of “The Father” in 2020, while the other is for “Silence of the Lambs” in 1991. His nominated roles include “The Remains of the Day,” “Nixon,” “The Two Popes,” and “Amistad.”
Despite his catalog of accolades, the “Red Dragon” actor was at the center of one of the strangest Oscar nights in recent memory, as detailed by The Blast. The 84-year-old brought down the show’s momentum when he didn’t show up for his acceptance speech after host Joaquin Phoenix announced him as the best actor winner for his outstanding performance in “The Father.”
Standing awkwardly on stage, Phoenix had to cut the final credits, which left a bad taste in the mouths of the audience at home. Hopkins was reportedly asleep as the late night awards were announced. This statement is reasonable because the presenter called him at about 4 am where he lives.

The following day, Mr. Hopkins released a video from what appeared to be a golf course in his native Wales to serve as his acceptance speech for his award. In the video, the “Hannibal” actor said he was surprised to win at his age but appreciated the consideration. Plus, he took a moment to honor his compatriot, Chadwick Boseman.
Martha Stewart Splits With Anthony Hopkins Over His 1992 Movie Role
Winning an Oscar is every actor’s dream; Hopkins has achieved that dream twice, but his first win cost him his girlfriend. The Blast shares that world-famous baker Martha Stewart ended things because she didn’t want her brain eaten by the Lecter-A character played by Hopkins in “The Silence of The Lambs.”
A year ago, Stewart appeared on an episode of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and gave a rather funny take on an old relationship. DeGeneres is known for getting the tea out of her guests, so it was no surprise when she introduced “Where’s The Lie, Martha?” segment, where the clue reads that Stewart broke off her romance with Hopkins because she couldn’t stop seeing him as Hannibal Lecter.
The host thought it was a lie, but the former stockbroker confirmed it was true. He recounted, “I have a big scary house in Maine that sits by itself on a hundred acres in the woods. I can’t imagine bringing Anthony Hopkins there. All I could think about was that he was eating, you know…”
