Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) — who began several border visits during the Trump administration — was evasive when pressed about why she didn’t visit the border while President Biden was in office.
The left-wing representative said that he is focused on the city’s ongoing immigration crisis and plans to travel in the future when asked by the New York Times why he hasn’t gone to the border under Biden.
“This is something we are actively planning. What I have done is visit our New York area facility. Right now, this crisis is in our own backyard,” he told the Times.
The news outlet repeatedly teased him about not making the adventure, prompting him to insist that it was in the works.
“This crisis is happening in our own backyard, I really prioritize the attendance of the visit,” he replied.
“If we only think of the immigration crisis as a border issue and only understand our border as the southern border instead of John F. Kennedy Airport, that’s a lack of imagination,” he added.

The immigration woes have fueled friction between New York Democrats like Mayor Adams, who wants more federal aid, and Biden.
Even the 33-year-old Ocasio-Cortez told the New York Times that “immigration is arguably the weakest issue of this administration.”
In 2019, Ocasio-Cortez visited a border complex in El Paso, Texas and attacked the state of immigrants under former President Donald Trump.
“This administration has established detention camps on the southern border of the United States for immigrants, where they are mistreated in inhumane conditions and die,” he wrote on social media at the time.

The 2019 trip was one of several high-profile efforts he made to the southern border during the Trump administration.
But now the border crisis is at his doorstep. Nearly 100,000 immigrants have entered New York City since last spring, according to data from City Hall.
Some of them came on buses from red states like Texas eager to have liberal enclaves share their experiences with the border crisis.

During fiscal year 2022, US Customs and Border Protection reported a record 2.4 million encounters at the border.
For the first nine months of fiscal year 2023, there were at least 1.7 million immigrant encounters at the border, according to the agency.
