AOC slams US vote against UN cease-fire push in Gaza: ‘Shameful’

Far-left Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slammed the Biden administration over the weekend for vetoing a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) condemned the White House as “shameful” in a post on X after the US canceled the move, which was supported by all but one other member of the Security Council and dozens of other countries in the global body.

“The Biden administration can no longer reconcile their concerns for Palestinians and human rights while single-handedly vetoing UN calls for a cease-fire and overriding the entire US Congress to unconditionally support the indiscriminate bombing of Gaza,” he wrote.

Ocasio-Cortez, 34, who has supported President Biden’s re-election bid, has also publicly criticized his approach to Israel’s war against Hamas.

In voting against the resolution on Friday, the US claimed that the process was rushed and avoided some of its recommendations.

The United Kingdom abstained from voting on the resolution, which would pass if the US did the same. The remaining members — Albania, Brazil, China, Ecuador, France, Gabon, Ghana, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, Russia, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates — voted in favor.

“It will just leave Hamas where it is, able to regroup and repeat what it did on October 7,” Robert Wood, deputy US ambassador to the UN said after the vote.

“This resolution basically says Israel just has to tolerate this,” Wood added. “We do not support this resolution’s call for an unsustainable ceasefire that will only plant the seeds for the next war.”

As one of the five permanent members of the Security Council, the US can veto any resolution on its own.

Ocasio-Cortez has publicly called for a ceasefire in Israel, which has been at war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip since the terrorist group’s Oct. 7 attack, which killed about 1,200 civilians — including 33 Americans.

Other members of the so-called “Squad” have been at odds with Biden in Israel.

Recently, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), the only Palestinian-American woman in Congress, announced she is withholding her support for Biden’s re-election next year.

“My struggles with the president are a number of issues,” he told the Wall Street Journal over the weekend.

“They feel invisible to the government,” Tlaib told his Middle Eastern voters channel, “and that’s something I have to have a conversation with [President Biden] about.”

A new WSJ poll found a deep split among Democrats on Israel, with 24% saying they sympathize more with the Palestinians, compared to 17% who sympathize more with Israel, while 48% have equal sympathy for both sides.

Meanwhile, 55% said Israel engaged in an appropriate response to the October 7 attacks, while only 25% believed the Jewish state went too far and 20% said they did not know or refused to answer.

Despite his strong support for Israel, Biden scored low with the public over his handling of the crisis— receiving a 37% approval rating and a 52% disapproval rating.

Other “Squad” members such as Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Cori Bush (D-Mo.) and Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), face stiff primary challenges in 2024.

Some of their challengers have hammered them for their lack of support.
