In 2017, he contested the UP assembly elections from Lucknow Cantt as a Samajwadi candidate but BJP’s Rita Bahuguna Joshi won the election. On 19 January 2022, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and left the Samajwadi party ahead of the 2022 UP assembly elections. On 21 January 2022, he took to social media to share a photo in which he touched the feet of his father-in-law Mulayam Singh Yadav, taking his blessings ahead of the assembly elections.

- In 2017, Aparna courted controversy when in an interview she gave a statement about her views on caste-based reservations. He said that the booking in the system was incorrect. After he gave the statement, the opposition said that he had failed OBCs, Scheduled Castes and Tribes.
