In 2017, he contested the UP assembly elections from Lucknow Cantt as a Samajwadi candidate but BJP’s Rita Bahuguna Joshi won the election. On 21 January 2022, he took to social media to share a photo in which he touched the feet of his father-in-law Mulayam Singh Yadav, taking his blessings ahead of the assembly elections.

- In 2017, Aparna courted controversy when in an interview she gave a statement about her views on caste-based reservations. He said that the booking in the system was incorrect. After he gave the statement, the opposition said that he had failed OBCs, Scheduled Castes and Tribes.
