Apple users warned about fake update that steals money, passwords

It’s like a cybernetic phishing scheme.

Just when you thought it was safe to get back on the laptop, tech chiefs have revealed a fake browser update infecting Apple computers with a type of malware that steals passwords and money.

Dubbed the “ClearFake” scam, the cybernetic Trojan horse has been targeting Windows systems since July but recently began targeting Mac users as well, according to a recent Malwarebytes report confirming its existence, Bleeping Computer reported.

“#Clearfake campaign abusing the binance block is not limited to Windows #malware,” warned cyber threat expert Ankit Anubhav in a Nov. 17 post.

This nefarious phishing scheme works by bombarding both phone and Macbook users with fake Chrome updates that appear on compromised sites via Javascript injection.

When they click the prompt, their system is infected with Atomic Stealer, a malware system that can steal passwords to important accounts, as well as photos, documents and video files.

If that’s not sophisticated enough, the system has the ability to hack data from more than 50 cryptocurrency connections, as well as keychain passwords.

This illegally obtained information can then be used for a variety of nefarious purposes from extortion to identity theft.

According to the aforementioned report, this malware is particularly dangerous because it disguises itself as Safari and Chrome updates.

And while ClearFake’s existence has been known since April 2023, it is reported to be under the radar of 50% of antivirus engines on cybersecurity site VirusTotal.

To prevent one’s computer from being infected with the Atomic Stealer malware, experts say Mac users should avoid downloading browser updates from third-party sites and pop-ups.

As they say, Safari browser updates are only distributed through macOS software updates.

Tech experts are also urging Apple fans to strengthen their security systems by downloading the latest antivirus software – but only from reputable sites, of course.
