Arizona mother and partner sentenced for ‘horrific’ child abuse, including setting 10-year-old on fire

An Arizona mother and her romantic partner were sentenced to 20 years in prison for extreme child abuse that included physical assault, withholding food and evidence a defendant burned a 10-year-old victim.

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell announced prison terms for the child’s mother, Chloe Rae Sergent, and Keola Wimbish, who were both arrested on April 5, 2022, after family members reported the abuse to authorities.

The abuse of Sergent’s son was “significant,” Mitchell said, and included physical assault, withholding food, failure to seek medical treatment for injuries and evidence that one of the defendants set the child on fire.

FOX 10 in Phoenix reported in April 2022 that Sergent told investigators about the alleged abuse, which included hitting the child with a machete and a crowbar, and that family members told investigators they never saw the two feeding the child.

Doctors reported to the police that the child was severely malnourished, had 12 broken bones, among other severe injuries such as infected wounds that required surgical intervention to help heal the wounds.

Sergent and Wimbish both pleaded guilty in court to single counts of child abuse and attempted child abuse. Wimbish pleaded guilty to a second charge of attempted child abuse.

Both defendants were sentenced to 20 years in prison followed by 10 years of supervised probation.

Sergent and Wimbish were in a romantic relationship at the time of the abuse, and both lived with the victim and two other children.

“The abuse this child suffered at the hands of people who were supposed to love and care for him was appalling,” Mitchell said. “I am very grateful to this young victim who is willing to tell his story bravely. Thanks to the intervention of a concerned relative, a thorough investigation by the police, and the hard work of MCAO prosecutors, justice has been served.”
