Arizona woman found dead in Bryce Canyon National Park after hike

An Arizona woman was found dead in Utah’s Bryce Canyon National Park after she went hiking and never returned, officials said.

Jeanne Roblez Howell, 64, was reported missing Friday after she didn’t return from a 2 p.m. hike on the Fairyland Loop trail, the National Park Service said.

The NPS, the Garfield County Sheriff’s office and the Utah Department of Public Safety searched the area and found the Sedona native around 1:30 a.m. Saturday in Campbell Canyon — one mile east of Fairyland Loop.

Howell was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of death has not yet been determined by the Campbell County medical examiner, but the NPS noted that thunderstorms caused heavy rain in the area Friday afternoon.

Flash flooding was reported at dry washes along the 8-mile route, the NPS said.

“This is a tragic event, and our deepest sympathies go out to the friends and family of the victims,” said Allana Olbrich, acting superintendent of Bryce Canyon.

Bryce Canyon National Park, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, is located about four hours northeast of Las Vegas.
