Armed man holding 4-year-old daughter hostage on German airport tarmac in suspected custody dispute

A gunman drove through security at a German airport and is now holding his 4-year-old daughter in her car on the runway, according to reports.

The 35-year-old man broke through a fence at Hamburg Airport around 8:15 p.m. Saturday and fired several shots into the air with a weapon, according to federal police.

He also threw a Molotov cocktail from his vehicle, which he placed next to a Turkish Airlines commercial plane while passengers were on board, German newspaper Bild reported.

The plane was immediately evacuated, and all passengers were safe, police confirmed.

Just before he crashed through the security barrier, the man’s wife had called the police about a possible child abduction.

Police later confirmed that the man had a 4-year-old girl in the car who was believed to be his daughter.

The man, believed to be of Turkish origin from Lower Saxony, had forcibly taken the child from his mother amid a custody battle, according to the newspaper.

Federal police spokesman Thomas Gerbert told dpa that a large number of officers from the state and federal police were at the location and around the vehicle.

Police also said that a psychologist was speaking with the man and there were no signs of anyone else being hurt as all passengers had evacuated the airport.
