A US Army soldier surprised his daughter on a school visit Friday after returning from an overseas deployment in an emotional reunion captured on video.
Eight-year-old Harlem Scott received a gift better than anything that could fit under a Christmas tree when he ran into the arms of Army Spc. Ralea Scott inside the Lafon Center for the Arts in Luling, Louisiana last week.
The second-grader was “randomly” chosen to invite a special guest on stage, only to realize the honored visitor was his own mother who had just returned from a nine-month deployment in the Middle East.
“Mommy!” he exclaimed as soon as he saw Ralea, still in her Army fatigues with a teddy bear on her back, according to the footage.
As the two hugged and cried, an entire auditorium filled with Harlem classmates at St. Charles erupted in a raucous cheer.

“I couldn’t stop crying,” Allemands Elementary School principal Lisa Perrin told Nola.com. “It’s great to know that he might get the one thing in the world that he’s been praying for on vacation.”
Ralea, who joined the Army directly after graduating high school in 2013, worked as a mechanic in Jordan and Kuwait, the newspaper reported.
He was usually only out of the house for three weeks at a time – not nine months.

“At first, she was sad,” Ralea, 28, told her daughter. “He kept wondering when I was coming home.”
While the couple kept in touch through Facetime calls and texts, Ralea knew she wanted to surprise Harlem as soon as she learned the date of his return.
The happy moment was planned to take place before a performance by The Lightwire Theater.
Ralea’s mother, Dawn Scott, who was taking care of her grandson during the deployment, was also surprised when she saw Ralea back in town.
School officials called Fajar to come to the art center, claiming her grandson was unwell. But when he arrived, he saw his daughter and grandson smiling widely.
As Dawn wiped away her tears, she gave Ralea a warm hug, Nola.com reported. And then Harlem joins in the emotional embrace.
