Authorities in Aruba are reportedly weighing the possibility of bringing new charges against Joran van der Sloot since he confessed to killing Natalee Holloway on the island 18 years ago, officials said.
Van der Sloot, 36, told US investigators earlier this month that he beat 18-year-old Holloway to death on an Aruban beach and dumped her body in the ocean in May 2005.
Although the statute of limitations on murders in Aruba expires after 12 years, the question of whether the island’s prosecutors will bring new charges against the former suspect “cannot be answered with a clear yes or no” because van der Sloot was a minor at the time of the crime. , Ann Angela, spokeswoman for the Aruba Public Prosecutor’s Office, told Fox News Digital.
“It depends on various factors in the investigation,” continued Angela.
“As it is an open investigation, the Public Prosecutor’s Office will only provide limited information to the media, also regarding the statute of limitations issue.”

Holloway’s infamous disappearance “is still an open investigation in Aruba,” Angela said.
“We have asked the US Department of Justice for all documents related to the investigation, which we will review before deciding on the procedural steps to be taken against Joran van der Sloot. To date, although we are indeed aware of the newspaper report, we have not yet been officially informed by the US authorities,” he explained.
The Prosecutor’s Office did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment on its progress in the case.

Holloway disappeared on the last night of her senior class trip to Aruba on May 30, 2005.
The Alabama resident was last seen leaving the bar with 17-year-old van der Sloot, who later became the prime suspect in her disappearance.
He has been arrested several times over the years along with his friends Satish and Deepak Kalpoe, Fox News Digital said.

Aruban authorities also questioned his father, Paulus van der Sloot, several times before his sudden death in 2010.
In early October, Joran van der Sloot finally admitted that he kicked Holloway in the head and smashed his face with a flint when he pushed him on the beach.
The shocking admission was part of a plea deal he struck with US prosecutors as part of the case against him for trying to extort $250,000 from the Holloway family in 2010.

In an Alabama court last week, van der Sloot pleaded guilty to taking money from desperate loved ones before leading their investigators on a dead-end trip to Peru – where he killed 21-year-old Stephany Flores exactly five years after Holloway was last seen.
The father-of-one was sentenced to 20 years for blackmailing and defrauding the Holloway family — which he will serve concurrently with his 28-year rap for killing Flores in Peru’s Challapalca.
Van der Sloot hates the conditions in Challapalca, which is high in the mountains and known for freezing temperatures and a lack of cell phone service, his lawyer previously told Fox News Digital.
Over the years, van der Sloot told various stories about what allegedly happened to Holloway — so many that his brother didn’t believe the latest confession.
But Holloway’s mother, Beth Holloway, told CBS News last week that she has “peace” that her daughter’s case can finally be closed.
“After 18 years, Natalee’s case has been resolved,” he told reporters outside the court.
“Joran van der Sloot is a murderer.”
