Till class 5, he studied at Shiv Niketan Public School, New Delhi. In 1983, he completed class 12 at VM Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Public School, New Delhi. Later, he continued his studies for a BA in History Honors. at Hindu College, New Delhi. While he was studying at Hindu College, he started performing in theater plays. He later joined Act One theater group and Sambhav Theater Group in New Delhi. In 1990, he completed an acting course at the National School of Drama, New Delhi.

Ashish married twice; he was first married to actress Rajoshi Vidyarthi, who is the daughter of famous Bengali actress Shakuntala Barua. The couple had a love marriage. On November 15, 2000, Ashish’s son Arth Vidyarthi was born.
