Ashley Graham Has Some Blowback For Her Sports Illustrated Cover

Although Graham’s “body positivity” principles have contributed to changing the way the modeling industry views plus-size women, there have been some obstacles along the way, sometimes even from colleagues.

In 2020, she recalled that a fellow model criticized Sports Illustrated magazine for allowing her to grace their 2016 cover.

“There was another model who was really upset that I got the cover, and she said I’m so big and a woman my size shouldn’t be on the cover,” Graham recalled in an interview with supermodel Naomi Campbell when she appeared in an episode of her YouTube series “No Filter With Naomi.”

Although Graham did not name the model on the show, it is alleged that the individual was Cheryl Tiegs, who, in 2016, told E! News“I don’t like us talking about full-figured women because it drives them crazy because your waist should be smaller than 35 [inches].”

Ashley Graham Hates Women Being Labeled

Graham regularly urges her followers to embrace their bodies by posting unfiltered images that show authentic, raw and intimate events from her life.

She also mentioned that she doesn’t like the term “real woman” being used to describe herself. In an interview with Ella starting in 2016, she expressed her desire for society to stop labeling women by their appearance.

“There are so many women out there who are naturally thin, or naturally curvy, and I think when we start putting labels on what type of woman it is, it gets misconstrued and starts to offend people,” Graham said at the time. “At the end of the day, we all just want to be known as women or models or actresses or whatever.”
