On Wednesday, Ashley took to Instagram to share a photo of the cake and a lengthy tribute to her mother. “My birthday. Everyone who loves me made it as soft (cake on the bed) and precious as they could, because my mind couldn’t help but count that on my last birthday, Mom lived only 11 days after her death by suicide, ” she wrote in the caption. “So this is my first time without her. I think about her all the time. I saw my baby announcement & sat with her gentle joy sharing about me.”
“I remember his annual ritual of telling me the day of my birth, all the details that were so precious to him,” she continued. “During my birthday at one point he would shine, pat my arm, ‘you were brown when you came out, surprised me, and the sweetest, easiest baby…. how much I love you, I have to beat the hands of people who want to touch you,’ and tell me about my baby story.”
“I wish all parents did that for their kids on their birthdays,” Ashley wrote. “We celebrate so many things together with my Chosen Family: picnics, running around, the Smoky Mountains, conversations about parenting (‘when we know better, we do better’) social issues, & light-hearted laughter the sun in my memory. Last year, as you can imagine, was more muted, so close to the end.”

“Pop and he came over with roast chicken and cornbread, and we shared a small dish, the three of us,” he explained. “Mama lays down a lot. We had cake and despite being weak and busy with the illness that was eating away at him, he had a beautiful card for me and I knew, as always, how much he loved me. I know that today too, even though he breathes in God’s infinite grace.”
“Thank you, Mom, for all my birthdays so far, and for celebrating me: for holding me at bedtime and whispering in my ear, ‘Ashley, you’re an amazing woman,’ and letting me be your Sweetpea. What more does a birthday girl need, than memories of a mother like that? And this is how he sees and loves me, first awake, hair never brushed, ready to share our dreams,” he concluded. “For you, Mom. For you.”

Before her performance, Wynonna told Entertainment Tonight, “I’m going to use my time to talk to anybody out there who’s struggling,” adding, “This is an opportunity to help somebody.”
Wynonna also said that it was a “bittersweet time” as the family celebrated the milestone without their mother. In addition to Ashley’s birthday, granddaughter Naomi also celebrated her first birthday this month. “I had both the agony and the ecstasy going on,” Wynonna explained.
