Ashokan (1962 – 2022) was an Indian film director. He mainly worked in Malayalam cinema. During his filmmaking career, he directed more than 130 Malayalam films. He died in Kochi, India on September 26, 2022 after suffering from various health problems. He lives in Singapore with his family and manages a software company there. He was transferred to India from Singapore a few months before his death and was under medical supervision at a hospital in Kochi.

Career

Ashokan started working in the Malayalam film industry after completing his higher education. He started working as an assistant director under the supervision of the late filmmaker J. Sasikumar. In the late 1980s, he became an independent director and began directing Malayalam films. In 1989, he made his directorial debut with the film Varnam in which Malayalam actors Jayaram, Ranjini, and Suresh Gopi appeared in the lead roles.

In the early 1990s, he became popular in the Malayalam film industry for directing superhit films such as Saandhram (1990), Mookilla Rajyathu (1991), and Aacharyan (1993). He gained immense commercial popularity and critical success with these films. Reportedly, Ashokan has mostly collaborated with Malayalam actor Suresh Gopi in film direction. He then directed the film Saandram starring Suresh Gopi and Parvathy in 1990. He co-directed the film with filmmaker Thaha. In the film, Suresh Gopi and Parvathy play the role of a married couple, and while the couple is on their honeymoon, they are haunted by a dangerous man.

Later, he shot for the telefilm Kanappuragal, which was awarded with the prestigious Kerala State Film Award. In 1993, he made the Malayalam film Aacharyan, written by B Jayachandran, a journalist scriptwriter.

In 1991, he directed the Malayalam film Mookkilla Rajyathu, which was very popular. This film is known as the best comedy film in the Malayalam film industry. The film stars Thilakan, Jagathy Sreekumar, Mukesh, and Thilakan. The plot of the film revolves around four people who escape from a mental hospital and struggle a lot in the outside world for their survival.

In 2003, his telefilm Melody of Loneliness won the Kerala State Award shortly after its release by the Kerala government.

Death

On September 26, 2022, Raman Ashok Kumar died in a hospital in Kochi, India after suffering from various health problems.
