Oscar Pistorius has been granted parole, after serving 1o years for murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
The former Paralympic champion was convicted in 2016 of shooting Steenkamp several times through a bathroom door, insisting he thought he was a burglar. Sentenced to 13 years and five months in prison, he is scheduled to be released on parole on January 5, 2024.
Oscar Pistorius Receives Parole After Board Review of His Profile
The South African Department of Correctional Services has confirmed that Oscar Pistorius is scheduled to be released in January as decided by the parole board. Through social media to make the announcement, the ministry wrote in a statement:
“The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) confirmed the placement of parole for Mr. Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius, effective from January 5, 2024. Mr. Pistorius was initially convicted of culpable homicide in 2014, but the case went through several appeals and was finally confirmed to 13 years and five month in 2017.”
After pointing out the importance of parole placement as part of a rehabilitation program to deal with “offensive behaviour,” the ministry explained that authorities will monitor Pistorius until he completes his sentence. The statement is in part read:
“Mr Pistorius will complete the remainder of his sentence in the community corrections system and will be subject to supervision in compliance with parole conditions until his sentence is complete.”

Reacting to the news, one write, “He served his time of shame. Now he can go back to running, continue his career, have a new Reeva, have a family. Life goes on,” for a moment ask“Let the man go home, why are you still holding him until January?,” and the third reprimanded“An absolute disgrace.”
Meanwhile, the first amputee to win a non-disabled world track medal at the 2011 World Athletics Championships was also required to attend therapy sessions.
The claim was made by a spokesperson for the Steenkamp family, according to PEOPLEwho also shared that Steenkamp’s mother, June Steenkamp, wrote in a letter to the parole board before the trial.
In the message, he stated that while he was not opposed to Pistorius’ early release, he was concerned about whether he had really dealt with “huge anger issues” while in prison. He also voiced potential “concern for the safety of any woman” who met the now 37-year-old.
The parents skipped Friday’s hearing at the Atteridgeville Correctional Facility, citing in his absence, “I just can’t muster the energy to face it anymore at this stage.”
Pistorius fatally shot Steenkamp multiple times through a closed bathroom door on Valentine’s Day, 2013, at his home in Pretoria, South Africa. Although the bisected man, affectionately dubbed the “Knife Runner,” admitted to shooting the law school graduate during his trial, he claimed that he mistook him for a thief.
Despite pleading not guilty, prosecutors argued that he deliberately killed the 29-year-old model in a fit of rage.
2008 Summer Paralympic Gold Champion Previously Denied Early Release
As The Blast reports, BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award winner Helen Rollason was denied early release from prison at the end of March. Explaining why his request was denied, the news release declared:
“The reason given is that the prisoner did not complete the minimum Detention Period as set by the Supreme Court of Appeal.”
At the time, Pistorius had only served six years of a 13-year sentence, and the mother of his dead girlfriend opposed his release, expressing concern about his rehabilitation.
He also revealed his belief that he did not serve enough time for the crime against his daughter. When he was asked to speak to the prisoner’s hope for freedom, he told the court:
“Although we welcome today’s decision, today is not a reason to celebrate. Barry and I miss Reeva dearly and will for the rest of our lives. We believe in justice and hope it continues to happen.”
The family’s lawyer, Tania Koen, also expressed her opinion on the denial of the release. He detailed, “I can confirm that parole has been denied. They will reconvene in a year to reconsider him again, and we don’t yet know the reason (for the denial).”
It is worth noting that South Africa’s Constitutional Court later ruled that the decision was a mistake, prompting Pistorius’ parole hearing on Friday. The Department of Correctional Services said he will undergo a parole reconsideration in August 2024.
