The former athlete has been locked up since 2017 after “accidentally” shooting his then-girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp to death. it was revealed to him that he won’t be out of prison until August 2024 and that’s only if his parole is approved.
Although the murder took place ten years ago, Pistorius only served six years in prison, not enough to consider parole. Looks like his lawyer jumped the gun. The South African athlete will remain in Atteridgeville prison on the outskirts of Pretoria.
Furthermore, Steenkamp’s mother June opposed his early release. He doesn’t think he’s recovered and shouldn’t be allowed out in public anymore meaning, he hasn’t given enough time to the grieving mother.

The model mother was in court to address Pistorius’ hopes of being freed after just six years in prison for murder. “Although we welcome today’s decision, today is not a reason to celebrate,” he said opening his statement.
“Barry and I miss Reeva very much and will for the rest of our lives. We believe in justice and hope it continues to happen.” The family’s attorney also had a few words to share about the denial of the release.

“I can confirm that parole has been denied, they will reconvene within a year to reconsider him and we don’t know the reason yet (for the denial),” said Tania Koen. But the justice department later revealed “the reason provided was that the inmate did not complete the minimum Detention Period.”

The once-athlete ended up in lockup after he was shot four times through the bathroom door killing his then girlfriend. He was found guilty and imprisoned for 13 years. He maintained his innocence and said he believed the intruder was in his home and intended to harm him and/or Steenkamp.
The high-profile case took over South Africa and even American news. When Pistorius was charged with manslaughter (manslaughter in the US) in 2014. He and his legal team appealed several times before he accepted his fate and reported to prison for a 13-year sentence.

In South Africa, serious offenders are required to serve at least half of their sentence and one could say that if he hadn’t wasted years pleading he would probably be halfway by now and no more than a year into the sentence,
Pistorius’ lawyers have made it clear that they intend to contest this decision. June, who was not present but made her voice heard said she believed Pistorius was “not remorseful or rehabilitated.”

He continued, “I don’t believe the story.” And went on to share intimate details, her husband’s dying wish was that “before he died, he had one wish and Oscar would only tell us what happened that night.”
May the parents get their wish.
