Australian Josh Taylor has died five days after being buried in a 5ft deep sand pit dug for a pig roast on a remote beach.
The 23-year-old died on Thursday at Princess Alexandra Hospital after his family took him off life support.
“He fought his hardest and was the bravest person we’ve ever known,” Taylor’s family said in a statement.
“Unfortunately, the injuries he received were too severe for him to overcome.”
Taylor was hailed as “the best son, brother, boyfriend and partner we could all hope for” who will be “missed every minute of every day.”
Taylor was spending time with friends on Saturday afternoon at Bribie Island — a popular camping spot north of Brisbane — when he fell face first into a sand pit.
Authorities are still investigating “and believe there may be many people present who have not yet spoken to police.”

A man who helped dig Taylor told local outlet 7 News that the hole had been prepared for cooking pigs.
“He stood up from the chair, the sand had been thrown a little under him,” said the witness, identified only as Nathan.
“He stumbled backwards. He stretched out his hand to break the fall, he continued to fall and hit the sand when he took his hand out,” the witness added. “He’s in a hole so you can’t see him, his legs, unless you’re standing over the hole.”
It took 15 people to pull the 23-year-old man from the sand using a rope tied to his leg, but the rescue effort appears to have caused additional injuries.
