An Australian news station has come under fire after airing photos of a female politician’s doctor who “enlarged” her breasts and made her clothes more revealing.
An altered image of Victorian Legislative Council member Georgie Purcell, 31, appeared on Melbourne’s Nine News on Monday night after she criticized the government’s rejection of a duck hunting ban.
“Having my body and clothes photoshopped by the media is not in my bingo card,” wrote the state’s youngest member of parliament.
He shared the image used by 9 News alongside the original.
“Notice the breasts and clothes that are enlarged to make them more revealing,” wrote Purcell, a former stripper who has spoken out about being a constant target of sexism.
“Can’t imagine this happening to a male member of parliament. What gives?”

The photoshopped image not only “enlarged” Purcell’s breasts but changed her outfit from a white tank top dress to a midriff-baring crop top.
The tattooed politician and lawyer stated how the altered photo could not possibly be of him.
“Hot tip 9 I’ve tattooed my entire stomach,” he said of the ink-free flesh seen in the news image.
Hugh Nailon, director of Melbourne’s Nine News, later apologized for the “graphical error” that occurred due to “automation by Photoshop.”

“I sincerely apologize to Georgie Purcell for the graphic error that occurred in last night’s bulletin,” he said.
“Our graphics department sourced an online image of Georgie to use in our story about duck hunting. As usual, images have been resized to fit our specifications. During that process, automation by Photoshop creates images that are inconsistent with the original,” Nailon said.
“This does not meet the high editorial standards we have and for that we apologize to Ms Purcell unreservedly.”

Purcell, who is the youngest woman in state parliament, has spoken out about being a constant target of sexism.
The 31-year-old lawyer, who worked as a stripper to put herself through school, told the BBC that the changed image had reinvigorated the sexist violence she had received since she was elected in 2022.
“[They are] criticizing me, telling me to go back to the pole, like arming me,” he said.
Purcell also questioned Nine News Melbourne’s response and why newsroom staff did not realize her clothes had been sexually touched.
“These are not just random people on the internet,” he said. “This is an organization with a lot of staff and a lot of resources that frankly should know better.”
