Authorities find record-breaking 9.5 tons of cocaine in banana shipment meant to go to 30 drug rings

Spanish authorities found a record-breaking 9.5 tonnes of cocaine in a shipment from Ecuador intended to go to 30 European drug cartels.

The large shipment was found on Wednesday in refrigerated containers of bananas in the southern port of Algeciras.

The boxes are marked with 30 logos associated with different European crime groups that are expected to get the coveted drugs.

Police did not name any of the establishments.

“This operation is an unprecedented blow to one of the world’s most important criminal organizations in the distribution of cocaine, targeting a major criminal network in Europe,” police said in a statement.

Criminal organizations in Ecuador have a large network to send drugs to Spain, mainly to the ports of Algeciras and Vigo in the northwest, through international banana trading companies located in Ecuador’s main banana port, Machala.

They are able to deliver up to 40 containers a month, some of which carry drugs, police said.

The box was supposed to hold 1,080 bananas, according to Jose Carlos Arobes, a senior official for Spain’s tax agency.

The investigation began in July after police received information about shipments of Colombian cocaine coming from Ecuador in August.
