For one grateful family, there’s no place like home for the holidays.
A Missouri girl who was born the size of a “baby bird” four months early and spent nearly 10 months in the hospital finally made it home — just in time to be her parents’ greatest Christmas “present.”
Evangeline “Evie” Statler will celebrate her first holiday at home with mom and dad after she only had about a 50% chance of living when she gave birth at a Cape Girardeau hospital on March 24 – about four months before her July due date. – and weighs just 14 ounces, according to reports.
“For the timing to line up with Christmas, it’s like, symbolic, almost like, yeah, she’s our gift,” the newborn’s father, Dylan Statler told KSDK after Evie was released Monday.
Evie arrived prematurely after mum Maddie Statler, 27, explained she woke up with back pain, and later that day started having contractions.
After he suffered some bleeding, he went to the hospital, ABC’s “Good Morning America” reported.

She received medication to stop the premature birth, but the bleeding continued while in the hospital. Maddie was bleeding from a placental abruption, a serious pregnancy complication, which resulted in Evie being born via C-section.
“It’s definitely scary,” Maddie said in a news release cited by People.
“We don’t know if we both will make it or not and we don’t know what will actually happen. He is very small, like a baby bird.”

Doctors told the couple their new daughter had less than a 50% chance of survival in what Dylan, 30, called a “nightmare scenario.”
“Every day is like a victory that we go through – like, if we get through another day there in the beginning, we count that as a victory,” he told ABC.
Evie was then transferred to St. Children’s Hospital. Louis in July for specialized treatment as he was still fighting for life and being treated for complications including high blood pressure in his pulmonary artery, ABC reported.
