A suburban Chicago woman has been charged in a horrific knife attack on two young children she was caring for, which left them covered in blood, police said.
Jennifer Kouchoukos, 51, is accused of repeatedly stabbing the girls, ages 1 and 4, on Nov. 17 at their home in Lisle, Illinois, the DuPage County District Attorney’s Office said.
Police in Lisle, Illinois, responded about 5:15 p.m. to a call about an attempted suicide at a home on Matson Lane, where they found a gruesome crime scene, officials said.
“Upon their arrival, officers observed one of the children sitting in the bathroom covered in blood and another child sitting nearby on the kitchen floor, also covered in blood,” the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office said in a statement about the girls, aged 1 and 4.
Their nanny, Kouchoukos, was found “wearing bloodstained clothes near the vanity in the same bathroom as the first child.”
Both victims were rushed to a local hospital with multiple stab wounds to their chests and backs, officials said. They were later transferred to Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago.

“Kouchoukos, who did not respond to any questions or instructions, was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment,” the statement said.
“While processing the scene, authorities found several knives stained with what appeared to be blood, an empty wine bottle and an almost empty bottle of rum,” he said.
Kouchoukos was released from the hospital on Tuesday and taken to the DuPage County Jail, where he faces several felony charges.
He is charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated battery on a child under 13 and two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
During his first court appearance, Judge Joshua Dieden granted the state’s motion to deny pretrial release to Kouchoukos, who is being held without bail pending his Jan. 12 trial.

Prosecutors also filed a motion for a psychiatric evaluation for the Naperville woman.
“This is a very troubling case for all involved,” Attorney General Bob Berlin said in a statement. “We are all very grateful that the injuries suffered by the young girls in this case are not life-threatening and they both appear to be on the road to recovery.
“I commend the Lisle Police Department for their efforts in this very upsetting case,” he added.
Lisle Police Chief Kevin Licko praised his officers for their response to the bloody crime scene.
“When they found out there was an injured child inside, the officers rushed into the house without hesitation. I commend them for carrying out their duties skillfully and professionally,” the top cop said in a statement.
