Backpack-wearing man arrested after climbing Santa Monica Ferris wheel, claiming to have bomb

A man who rode the Santa Monica Pier’s famous Ferris wheel and falsely claimed to have a bomb was arrested Monday afternoon, police said.

The unidentified climber, who was wearing a backpack during his ascent, prompted a mass evacuation at Pacific Park as first responders worked to remove riders from the attraction, according to reports.

The man claimed witnesses had a bomb when authorities tried to contact him, Santa Monica police said on social media.

Lt. Erika Aklufi told the Los Angeles Times officers tried to evacuate the rider as they tried to stop the man from the 85-foot structure.

The man can be seen in the news footage a little over the middle of the wheel between the beams.

At one point, authorities appealed to the news helicopter to take a higher altitude so the suspect and police officers could hear each other.

The man was in police custody around 4:30 p.m., police said in another release. He got off and was taken into custody by officers, NBC 4 LA reported.

No bombs or incendiary devices were found, police said.

Authorities said the man was in critical condition during his ascent.
