Campbell’s departure was ruled an “accident,” according to Timothy McGuirk, a spokesman for the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security. According to The Washington Post, the representative claimed the commonwealth did not release the autopsy results to the public but that the chief medical examiner had ruled the kitchen worker’s death accidental.
As noted, the culinary expert drowned while visiting the Obamas’ Martha’s Vineyard residence. Campbell was paddling at the Edgartown Big Pond when the tragic accident happened. Reports detailing the incident claimed the chef fell into the water after losing his balance. However, the cause of his instability remains unknown.
“Campbell was standing on his paddle board when he lost his balance and fell. He struggled to stay afloat before slipping under the water,” the report explained. “Campbell was not wearing a life jacket and was not strapped to his board. Campbell’s body was found in about 8 feet of water.”
On the evening he died, an unidentified woman who saw the former White House sous chef fall below the surface of the lake was unable to help him. Also, a rescue swimmer tried but failed to save the cook’s life.
More teams rushed in to rescue Campbell, including boat crews, dive teams, and even a Coast Guard helicopter. Unfortunately, they didn’t find the 45-year-old’s body until the next morning.

According to police, the chef’s body turned up minutes before 10 a.m. ET. “Divers from the MSP Underwater Recovery Unit made the recovery after the victim’s body was located by Massachusetts Environmental Police Officers using side scan sonar from the boat,” authorities explained in their press release.
In a separate statement, a representative for the Massachusetts State Police said former White House residents did not witness the gruesome death of their longtime chef. The spokesperson announced:
“Mr. Campbell was visiting Martha’s Vineyard at the time of his death. President and Mrs. Obama were not present at the residence at the time of the accident.”
The Obamas Pay Tribute to Their Old Chef
Following the confirmation of Campbell’s death, the former president and first lady paid tribute to the late chef with a touching tribute. In a joint statement, the couple reflected on their time with the father of two and his ability to bring people together with his food.
The couple claimed their lives were brightened by the 45-year-old’s “warm, fun, incredibly kind person.” For this reason, they asked the gourmet master to be their personal chef after leaving the White House.
“He’s been a part of our lives ever since, and our hearts are broken that he’s gone,” the two admitted, adding that they mourn Campbell’s loss along with his wife, twin sons and other loved ones.
Additionally, the couple shared individual tributes on Instagram, with Barack posting a photo of himself posing with the late White House chef.
“Tafari Campbell showed us true character. He believes that actions speak louder than words. And he used his great gifts to bring people together, provide comfort, and spread joy. I will miss him every day,” the Nobel Peace Prize winner captioned the post.
Michelle echoed similar sentiments in her tribute post, where she shared a photo of herself posing with Campbell and the same smiling photo of the chef her husband posted. The 59-year-old’s tribute read, “I will miss my friend, Tafari…the void is hard. But I promise to stay strong, stay alive, and honor your legacy in every way possible. Calm down my brother.”
