Bat infestation turned Airbnb rental into ‘house of horrors,’ suit claims

A group of Airbnb guests have claimed that their lively 50th high school reunion party at a rented house in Michigan turned into a “Halloween horror movie” when they were attacked by a “hord” of bats.

The distressed renter has filed a civil complaint against Airbnb for “negligently allowing the bat-infested home to be advertised on the platform,” according to a press release from Marko Law, who represents the plaintiffs.

The lawsuit also names as defendants the owner of the bat-infested property in the city of Alpena, nicknamed “The Castle,” and maintenance workers, accusing them of failing to make the residence safe before it was rented out.

Attorney Jon Marko described the situation as “every tenant’s worst nightmare,” the Detroit Free Press reported.

“What should have been a fun vacation turned into a house of horrors for my client,” Marko said. “No one expects to be attacked by a horde of bats. This plays out like a scene from a Halloween horror movie.

The plaintiff rented the house through Airbnb in late July 2023, and for the first three days of their stay everything was fine, according to the lawyer.

But on the third night, which fell on July 26, two guests staying in the large turret room were awakened by screams to find dark shapes flying around the bedroom.

The woman fled the room in terror into the hallway and closed the door behind them.

At first, the tenants believed it was just a stray bat that had somehow ended up in their bedroom, and they laughed at the creepy encounter.

But soon they were horrified to find an entire colony of Michigan Brown Bats filling the alley, according to the lawsuit.

The woman tried to run out of the house but found the stairs “eaten with bats,” the law firm claimed.

With their escape route cut off, the tenants ran back to their bedrooms and barricaded themselves inside, using window sashes, pillows and towels to cover the door – but despite their best efforts, the bats still managed to break into their rooms through gaps in the baseboards.

Several women were attacked by flying bats; others had airborne mammals entangled in their hair, and at least one guest suffered a bite, according to a press release.

Unable to escape, the woman tried to seek shelter from the winged intruder by climbing under the covers, but the bat managed to sneak into the bed.

It wasn’t until sunrise that the nocturnal animals retreated back to their hiding place in the attic.

An exterminator who was quickly called to the house found the attic covered “inch by inch” with bat guano and the basement walls dripping with bat urine, indicating that a large colony of bats had called “The Castle” its home for several years. .

The poor tenant was then instructed to get a rabies vaccine as a precaution after their close encounter with the bat.

Airbnb did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the lawsuit on Tuesday.
