Brian Wilson, co-founder of the “Beach Boys,” has filed to place the legendary musician under a conservatorship.
According to court documents, obtained by The Blast, a woman is listed in the filing as an agent for Brian’s travel company, along with a longtime publicist. The filing says he suffers from “major neurocognitive impairment (dementia-like).”
The famous record producer has a history of mental health problems and it is believed that he will not be able to take care of himself and treat the illness.
‘Beach Boys’ Star Brian Wilson Has Dementia
In the filing, Wilson’s team is seeking legal authority to help him with his medical treatment. Specifically, we’re told Wilson is suffering from Dementia and is being treated for the disorder.
It seems that the case revolves around his ability to properly treat the disease. The document states, “The (proposed) guardian does NOT have the capacity to give informed consent to the administration of appropriate medications for the care and treatment of major neurocognitive disorders (including dementia.)”
Adding, “Deficits in assessed mental functioning…significantly impair the (proposed) conservative’s ability to understand and appreciate the consequences of consenting to the administration of medication for the care and treatment of major neurocognitive disorders.”
Court documents indicate that “due to a medical disability, the proposed conservator was unable to attend a court hearing” on the matter.
The “capacity” filing in the case said that his “fear, depression, helplessness” were all “grossly inappropriate.” A doctor concluded, “He is easily distracted, often despite being aware of his surroundings, and his purpose. Often makes spontaneous utterances irrelevant or incoherent. Has a very short attention span and even when unintentionally disruptive, often cannot maintain the appropriate politeness of the situation.”
He is taking medication to “slow the progression of the disease.”

The conservatorship filing shows that his wife died on January 30, 2024, and he handles her “needs of daily living.”
At this point, they claimed, “Mr. Wilson was unable to properly provide for his personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter.”
As to why “the team” filed the document, it states, “Mr. Wilson has an Advance Health Care Directive that names Mrs. Wilson his agent for his health care. However, Mr. Wilson’s Advance Health Care Directive does not name a successor agent. Accordingly, a conservator of persons that had to be appointed for Mr. Wilson because of the death of Mrs. Wilson and the lack of a successor agent named in his Advance Health Care Directive. Jean Sievers was Mr. Wilson’s publicist and longtime manager, and LeeAnn Hard was Mr. Wilson’s longtime business manager. They had close ties to Mr. and Mrs. Wilson for many years, and Mr. Wilson trusted them. Ms. Hard did not seek the appointment of a conservator of the estate because Mr. Wilson had a trust, his assets were held in trust, and Ms. Hard was the trustee of his trust.”
Finally, the hope is that “Mr. Wilson will remain in his home, and it is Ms. Siever and Ms. Hard’s desire to ensure that all of Mr. Wilson’s daily living needs are met and that he receives the best possible care while in his home.”
At this point, a hearing will be held to determine if the judge agrees to place the legendary ‘Beach Boys’ star under a conservatorship. Court records show a hearing is set for April 26, 2024.

The legendary musician had long been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and bipolar disorder, which only worsened over time.
Wilson’s case is reminiscent of Jay Leno filing for conservatorship against his wife, Mavis, after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
The struggle of the musical genius dates back to the 1960s when he began to succumb to the pressure of being the main composer of the Beach Boys and surprisingly retired from music. However, it is not known to many that Wilson has been fighting demons since he was a child thanks to his abusive father, who allegedly physically abused him until he suffered damage to his ears.
Unfortunately, just as he was at the height of his career, the Hawthorne native began to experience a downward spiral following a nervous breakdown. Wilson left touring to focus on recording, resulting in him producing a history-making record for The Beach Boys.
However, alongside the burst of creativity came a decline in his mental health. He was battling depression, and his mental health diagnosis revealed himself in auditory hallucinations. It also didn’t help that Wilson began experimenting with LSD and other drugs in addition to alcohol abuse and an eating disorder.
As a result of his isolation, Wilson was introduced to a psychologist named Eugene Landy who gave him “24-hour therapy” treatment that included “a boot camp-level exercise regimen, a locked refrigerator and, on some mornings, a splash of icy water to get him out of bed.”
Although his experience with Landy was initially positive, bringing him back to normal, Landy soon became controlling and insinuated himself into all areas of Wilson’s life — becoming his business partner, record producer and occasional songwriting collaborator.
There was also the issue of Landy overcharging Wilson — as much as $20,000 per month — for Wilson’s therapy. During an interview when asked if Landy was too controlling, Wilson said:
“I thought so, but there was nothing I could do about it and I finally gave in. He definitely helped me. It cost over a hundred thousand dollars – he charged a very high monthly fee.”
Wilson continued with Landy despite being shackled, relapsed in the 1970s and finally overdosed in 1982. Finally, in 1989, Wilson was freed from Dr. Landy when the California State Board of Medical Quality revoked his professional license because of “Wilson’s psychological dependence on Landy.”
Wilson Loses His Wife Melinda Who Helped Him Overcome His Mental Illness

Wilson’s conservation comes just a month after he lost the main support system in his life — his wife Melinda Kay Ledbetter Wilson. Melinda died on January 30, 2024, and Wilson mourned her death in a touching social media post.
“My heart is broken. Melinda, my beloved wife of 28 years, passed away this morning. My five children and I are in tears. We are lost. Melinda is more than my wife. She is my savior,” he began. “She gave me the emotional security I needed to have a career. He encouraged me to make the music closest to my heart. He was my anchor. He was everything to us. Please pray for him. Love and mercy, Brian.”
Melinda, who met her husband at a Los Angeles Cadillac dealership in 1986, was critical in freeing Wilson from Landy’s shackles. “He was in a lot of trouble when I met him,” Melinda said of Mr. Landy. “I think originally he did help; he helped Brian lose weight, and he helped Brian take care of himself physically again. But then, as time goes on, he becomes very much a prisoner of Brian, where Brian is primarily a prisoner.
Days before news of the conservatorship, Rolling Stone revealed that a country record by the 81-year-old and his longtime Beach Boys manager Fred Vail is set for release next year. The project titled “Cows in the Field” has been delayed for more than five decades before it was expected to be released.
