Florida wildlife officials helped a bear cub out of a “cub conundrum” last week after finding the animal with its foot stuck in a tree stump.
A bear biologist was called in to help free the cub from “extraordinary trouble,” the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) said on Facebook.
Biologists and FWC officials who initially found the child worked for two hours trying to uproot the tree limb, while trying to avoid the child’s claws and sharp teeth, the agency said.
They also tried soaking the bear’s paws in dish soap, but none of their methods helped free the cub, according to the FWC.
“As a last resort, our officers found a local resident who lent the two great men a chainsaw,” the post read. “While our biologists were safely restraining the bear as best they could, our officers were able to cut one of the tree limbs that trapped the cub.”
The bear was released and given an immediate medical examination to ensure the animal was free of injury before wildlife officials reunited the cub with its mother, according to the agency.

The FWC also warns local residents that bears become more active in foraging as fall approaches.
“You can help prevent negative interactions with bears and other wildlife by securing trash, removing food attractants and following other BearWise practices,” the agency said.
