A beloved Washington state bagel shop owner was shot while on vacation in New Orleans and died in her husband’s arms, according to her heartbroken partner.
Jacob Carter, co-owner of popular Tacoma eatery Howdy Bagel, was shot to death about 1:30 a.m. Friday near Bourbon and Kerlerec streets in New Orleans’ Marigny neighborhood, The News Tribune reported.
Police said the gunman fled after shooting Carter, who was with her husband, Daniel Blagovich, when she fell. No arrests were made.
“He died in my arms,” Blagovich, who is also Carter’s business partner, told the news outlet in a phone call Monday.
Howdy Bagel, which began as a successful farmers market operation in 2021 before opening a store on South Tacoma Way in June, announced the tragic death on its Instagram page.

“If you knew Jake, you know he was someone who radiated kindness, warmth, and genuine concern for everyone he met. Jake was one of the brightest spots in the lives of everyone he loved. This loss is immeasurable for our community ,” it sounded.
The eatery was temporarily closed to give Blagovich and staff time to grieve.
“In an effort to support Daniel and the rest of the Howdy crew, we’re asking you to consider supporting Howdy in two ways. First, take care of each other,” the announcement said. “Showing ourselves by caring for one another when we are grieving is how we can honor the love that Jacob brought into this world.

“Secondly, to give Daniel space to grieve without having to worry about the logistics of running a business, we’re asking you to consider donating to help cover some of the store’s costs and employee wages during this difficult season,” the store continued.
“Daniel and Jacob are always amazed and grateful for the way this community comes together to support Howdy Bagel. We know that in this difficult season, you will all continue to show up with love and support,” he added.
A GoFundMe page created to cover rental costs and operating expenses has raised more than $217,000.

Carter, who is from Texas, and Blagovich, who is from West Seattle, launched Howdy Bagel after they were laid off from their jobs during the pandemic, according to The News Tribune.
Howdy’s name “kind of creates this sense of camaraderie and brings people together, brings people together and I think we’re trying to foster a place of inclusion for everybody,” Carter told KING 5 in July.

“Daniel and I grew up in environments where they weren’t always that way, especially to queer people, and so to have a storefront that feels welcoming to everyone I think is a big part of who we are and what we believe that space should be. ,” he said.
“There’s a lot of love that goes into each of these products,” added Carter.
Olympia Coffee, where Carter worked part-time, said it was “heartbroken” to learn of his death.
“Words cannot express the shock and pain we feel as a team at Olympia Coffee. Jake Carter is a close friend to many in our community,” he said in a social media post.
