The writing partners were paid a fortune for the 1997 Gus Van Sant film. They immediately thought they were rich bitches! Affleck detailed the story to Drew Barrymore The Drew Barrymore Show.
“When we sold ‘Good Will Hunting,’ I thought we were rich for life,” he admits sheepishly. “My needs are over! I don’t have to work anymore! I am rich forever!” is his sentiment. He never thought it would get this good
She tells how she and Damon spend their earnings. “We sell [the script] for $600,000. We split it, $300,000 each, and then the agent gets $30,000, so we have $270,000. We pay about $160,000 in taxes, so we have $110,000. We each bought a $55,000 Jeep Cherokee and then had $55,000 left over.”

Affleck and Damon used their leftover money to put a roof over their heads… for a few months. “Naturally, we decided to rent a $5,000-a-month party house on Glencoe Way by the Hollywood Bowl, and we were broke in six months,” he says with a smile.
Thankfully, the experience made these two men realize that as fast as it comes is as fast as it can go! They managed to maintain power in Hollywood, and now we can all confidently assume that money is not a problem for either side.
But before all their worries are put aside, they decide to unite for success, and one of the things involved is having a bank account. You might be thinking, why do two grown men share a bank account?
The way they explained it made perfect sense to The Blast. “It’s amazing, but we need money to audition,” Damon said Diversityadmit that it’s a little weird.
“We’re going to help and be there for each other,” Affleck added. “It’s like, ‘You’re not going to be alone. I’m not going to be alone. Let’s go out there and do this together.'”

Although both share accounts and have free reign of money, there are rules. “You are allowed to attend [auditions in] New York with the money. You are allowed to withdraw $10 and get a quarter and go to [the arcade] and playing video games,” Damon added. “Finally, we were allowed to try buying beer, which never worked.”
But if they don’t do this, who knows what life in Hollyweird will be like for them. “As long as one of us has money, we know the power will not be turned off. After doing [1992′s] ‘Geronimo’, I have maybe 35 grand in the bank. I said, ‘We’re good for a year,'” Damon said.
To this day, the besties still make movies together and support each other in Tinseltown. Most recently, they directed and starred Air together about the rise of Nike’s Air Jordans.
