Beyoncé Calls Out Right Said Fred For ‘Erroneous’ Sampling Accusations

Global star Beyoncé recently gave a rare response to comments made by UK pop duo Right Said Fred accusing her of unauthorized sampling. The 28-time Grammy winner released the album “Renaissance” at the end of July, and the track list includes several hits.

“Alien Superstar,” one of the more popular songs, reportedly samples Right Said Fred’s “I’m Too Sexy.” The group of brothers was created in 1989 and consists of two brothers, Fred and Richard Fairbrass.

The brothers accused the 41-year-old of sampling their songs without taking their permission. RSF cited other artists who asked for permission and called Beyoncé “arrogant” for the omission. Drake featured the song in “Way 2 Sexy,” and Taylor Swift used it in “Look What You Made Me Do.”

In response to Right Said Fred’s accusations, Beyoncé released a statement claiming that she had requested permission and made payment for the sampling of the duo’s hit song, “I’m Too Sexy.” Beyoncé previously sampled the famous song for her hit song “Alien Superstar.”

The “Love On Top” singer’s team contacted them The New York Post and described the comments by the couple as “wrong” and “deeply disparaging.” The statement read, “Comments made by Right Said Fred stating that Beyoncé used ‘I’m Too Sexy’ in ‘Alien Superstar’ without permission are wrong and deeply disparaging.”

“Not only was permission granted for its use, but they publicly expressed their gratitude for being on the album. For their songs, no sound recording was used; only composition is used,” continued the statement.

Beyoncé Pays for Samples

Further, Beyoncé’s statement revealed that after being given permission to use the song by the British artist’s producer, payments were made as of August. “Permission was requested from their publisher on May 11, 2022, and the publisher approved its use on June 15, 2022. They were paid for use in August 2022,” it read.

The Grammy-winning team further stated that Right Said Fred was listed as a co-writer on the song and credited with a large percentage of the song’s copyright. “Writer Right Said Fred’s copyright percentage with respect to the use of ‘I’m Too Sexy’ is a substantial part of the composition.”

“Collectively,” the statement concluded, “The writers of The Right Said Fred own more than any other single writer and co-writer credit. This allegation is false.”

Earlier this week, Sun reported that British artist Right Said Fred accused Beyoncé of being too “arrogant” to ask their permission despite sampling their song “I’m Too Sexy.” The artist claims that other musicians interested in sampling the song contacted them personally and asked for permission.

“Normally, the artist approaches us, but Beyoncé didn’t because she’s a snob,” they said. “He’s probably just thinking, ‘come and get me,’ so we hear it after the fact when you do.”

“Everybody, Drake and Taylor Swift, they come to us,” RSF said. They further explained that in order for an artist to try out their song, they would have to send a demo of the song, and if approved, the siblings would be given a co-writing credit. “With this Beyoncé thing, there are 22 writers it’s ridiculous, so we’re going to get about 40 [pounds].”

RSF later described the situation as “sh*t” and claimed that there was nothing they could do but let it go. “You’re going to be talking to someone who has more presence and power and money than we do. And that’s not going to go well.”

Beyoncé Accused Of Unauthorized Sampling By Kelis

In a similar incident in July, Beyoncé was accused of sampling a song by artist “Bossy” Kelis without permission. The allegations were made before the Grammy winner released her “Renaissance” album, and the track reportedly sampled Kelis’ song “Milkshake” for Beyoncé’s “Energy.”

At the time, the “Milkshake” singer said she didn’t know about the sample until the news broke around the world. A Beyoncé fan site posted the information, and Kelis took to the comments section to accuse the 41-year-old of being soulless.

“Some people in this business have no soul or integrity,” he wrote. Beyoncé primarily credits Kelis’ song; however, the artist claims that “It’s not a collaboration; that’s theft.” Unlike his recent move to issue a statement, the Grammy winner responded by simply removing the song from the album at the time.
