The Biden administration warned North Korea on Saturday that any nuclear attack on the United States or its allies would be “unacceptable” and spelled the “end” of Kim Jong Un’s dictatorship.
The statement came a day after the United States-Republic of Korea Nuclear Negotiations Group met in Washington to discuss nuclear deterrence efforts and plan for a potential showdown between the allied nations and North Korea’s plans.
The White House said any attack by Pyongyang on South Korea “will be met with a swift, overwhelming and decisive response.”
The thunderous message Saturday echoed President Biden’s warning in April to Pyongyang that any nuclear attack on the United States or its allies “would result in the end of any regime” that would take such action.
In August, however, North Korea revealed it had simulated a “scorched earth” nuclear attack on South Korea using a ballistic missile.
Pyongyang claimed the test was carried out in response to the United States flying long-range B-1B bombers over the Korean peninsula as part of joint exercises with South Korea.

North Korea has developed and tested ballistic missiles that can reach South Korea, Japan and the US.
Kim Tae-hyo, South Korea’s deputy national security adviser, said North Korea may test-launch an intercontinental ballistic missile, which can carry a nuclear warhead, later this month.
In September 2022, North Korea passed sweeping legislation that glorified the country as a nuclear-armed state, which Kim deemed “irreversible.”
