President Biden has declined to do a pre-game Super Bowl interview with CBS, making it the second year in a row he has avoided the traditional big game news sit-down.
Biden’s decision to skip the highest-rated telecast of the year was puzzling because it was an easy opportunity to speak directly to millions of voters in a tight election year.
The president, 81, participated in the interview during his first two years in office when the Super Bowl aired on NBC and CBS — but stepped aside last year when Fox News aired the big game.
CBS will televise this year’s championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers on February 11.
“We hope the audience enjoys watching what they’re watching — the game,” White House spokesman Ben LaBolt told Variety, which first reported Biden’s Super Bowl absence.

Presidential interviews have been a feature of nearly every Super Bowl broadcast since Barack Obama started the tradition in 2009.
In 2018, then-president Donald Trump declined NBC’s request for an interview ahead of Super Bowl LII after controversially criticizing players who refused to stand for the national anthem earlier in the season.
Biden has not given many press interviews since taking office.
The Super Bowl attracts tens of millions of fans every year.
Last year’s games drew an estimated 115 million viewers, a record-breaking number.
