Biden challenger Dean Phillips: ‘Irresponsible,’ ‘wrong’ and ‘dangerous’ for 80-year-olds to be president

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire — Democratic presidential candidate Rep. Dean Phillips has delivered his most brazen criticism of President Biden to date, telling The Post his re-election would be “dangerous” for the country.

“We are human, and I think it is irresponsible of the American people to put a president in the White House who is in his 80s. I think it’s wrong, I think it’s dangerous,” Phillips, 54, said Thursday during an interview at his campaign office in New Hampshire’s largest city.

“He’s a good man, he’s a good president, but I don’t think this country is looking for a president who’s over 80,” added Phillips (D-Minn.), citing polling data showing a majority of Americans. have concerns about Biden’s mental capacity.

Phillips went on to say that “a crisis is always looming” when “you get into your 80s” and reiterated that America can’t “take that risk in an era like this.”

Biden, the oldest president in US history, will be 86 at the end of his second term if he wins re-election and serves the full four years.

Biden’s age and lackluster personal popularity and electoral support have bolstered Phillips’ long-term campaign, which has taken as its premise that the incumbent cannot defeat 77-year-old GOP front-runner Donald Trump — whom the congressman also sees as a threat. to the US.

“There is a danger in the initiatives that Donald Trump seems to want to continue, which I think is to undermine the foundations of democratic institutions,” Phillips said.

However, the congressman – who would become the first Jewish president if he secures a miracle victory – took issue with the Biden campaign comparing Trump to Adolf Hitler over the former president’s recent comments about illegal immigrants “poisoning the blood of our country.”

“I think Donald Trump is a very dangerous person,” Phillips said. “I think he is a man who lacks character and he is a narcissist. I don’t believe he’s the same as Hitler at all and I think people who say that cause worse problems for the country than they solve.”

Phillips has focused his campaign in New Hampshire, where Biden will not be on the ballot because of a scheduling dispute between the Democratic National Committee and Granite State officials.

The DNC officially listed South Carolina as the first primary contest on February 6, but New Hampshire defied the order and set its primary for January 23.

Biden’s absence from the polls is a sign of disrespect for voters, said Phillips, who called the situation “absolutely ridiculous.”

“A sitting American president chose not to be on the ballot in the first major state in the country,” he said. “I think it’s a symptom of a broader disease, and that’s a lack of respect for voters across the country, including here.”

Phillips faces an uphill battle to get his own name on the ballot in all 50 states. He missed the deadline to register in Nevada and was left behind in several states that chose not to hold Democratic primaries because of Biden as the incumbent.

Democrats accused the president of “blatantly ignoring the signs of his own party that disenfranchises voters, disenfranchises candidates and stifles debate.”

While Trump poses a “bigger existential threat” to America, Phillips argued, Biden’s ignorance “will be a threat down the road.”

The White House did not respond directly Friday to Phillips’ comments, but directed The Post to press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s Oct. 31 statement, days after Phillips entered the race.

“We are very proud – or very excited and grateful to – the members of congress for voting with the president almost 100% of the time in the last two years,” Jean-Pierre said at the time, “and I’ll leave it there.”
