WASHINGTON – President Biden knew in advance that his son Hunter would address the media Wednesday morning instead of complying with a congressional subpoena for his testimony, the White House confirmed.
“The president is of course familiar with what his son will say and I think what you see is from the heart, from his son,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said during her regular briefing.
Jean-Pierre declined to say whether the 81-year-old president, who was a senator for 36 years, approved his 53-year-old son’s plans to defy legally binding demands that he answer questions about his foreign business dealings.
“Look, I have nothing more to add,” Jean-Pierre added in response to a follow-up question. “The president is familiar with what Hunter will say today. And he is proud of his son.”
Hunter’s refusal to comply comes ahead of a full vote Wednesday night by the House of Representatives to authorize an impeachment inquiry into the president over his alleged role in Hunter and first brother James Biden’s foreign affairs during his eight-year vice presidency.
The first son said in his five-minute speech that “my father is not financially involved in my business” — despite evidence Joe Biden met with Hunter’s Chinese, Kazakhstan, Mexican, Russian and Ukrainian associates during his vice presidency.

Republicans argue that formalizing the investigation, which begins Sept. 12, will strengthen congressional powers to compel testimony from Hunter and others, including James Biden, who also did not appear for a scheduled deposition last week.
Jean-Pierre also insisted Wednesday that Biden has no plans to pardon Hunter, who faces federal firearms charges in Delaware and tax fraud charges in Los Angeles after abandoning a plea deal only on probation — after demanding courtroom guarantees of immunity for other conduct. such as possible violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act, which would implicate his father.
“The president will not forgive his son,” said the press secretary
