President Biden marked the anniversary of the horrific attack on Kabul airport that killed 13 American service members in 2021 — issuing a statement six hours after Speaker Kevin McCarthy lowered the US Capitol flag in mourning.
“Two years ago today, we lost 13 brave servicemen and women in Afghanistan,” McCarthy wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Saturday morning. “I have ordered the flag at the US Capitol to be lowered to half-staff in honor of these American heroes.”
McCarthy followed the post with the names and photos of 11 Marines, a marine, and an Army sergeant — all between the ages of 20 and 31 — who were killed when an ISIS-K suicide bomber attacked a crowd at the airport’s Abbey Gate during the chaotic Afghan withdrawal. -hara by Biden.

Biden, who was enjoying the last day of his vacation in Nevada at Dem donor Tom Steyer’s $18 million Lake Tahoe estate, finally acknowledged the somber anniversary a few hours later, at 4:58 p.m., in a White House press release.
“We will forever honor the memory of 13 service members who were stolen too soon,” he wrote in a brief statement that did not name those killed – and that did not order the flag at the executive mansion to be lowered.
Biden has faced criticism from Gold Star families who say Biden did not treat them — checking his watch repeatedly at their dignified moving ceremony and talking about missing his late son Beau — following the deaths of their son and daughter.
