President Joe Biden kicked off a three-day fundraising trip in California on Friday that top campaign officials boast will raise a significant amount of cash for the Democratic presidential re-election effort in 2024.
The trip comes a day after the Justice Department filed new criminal charges against Biden’s son, Hunter, accusing him of failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes while spending millions of dollars on a lavish lifestyle.
California — and its deep-pocketed entertainment industry — has long served as a major source of funding for Democrats, but long-time offensive actors and screenwriters have had a sad effect on fundraising.

The end of labor unrest has unlocked pent-up money, said Jeffrey Katzenberg, a movie mogul and campaign co-chairman who has emerged as an influential voice in Biden’s re-election bid.
“It’s going to be the most successful day and a half of campaigning so far and probably one of the most successful days and a half before a general election, where things kind of kick into ‘other gear,’ that we’ve ever done. is here for any candidate,” Katzenberg said in an interview with Reuters.
Biden will participate in two Los Angeles fundraisers that will include directors Steven Spielberg and Rob Reiner and musicians Barbra Streisand and Lenny Kravitz.

The California swing is part of an onslaught of at least nine fundraisers Biden will hold before the end of the month.
Fundraising in California and an initial round in Boston are expected to raise at least $15 million, according to sources familiar with the event.
Katzenberg, who helped organize one of the fundraisers, said the final tally is still in the works.

“The amount is huge. I know that,” said Katzenberg, who founded DreamWorks Animation.
Biden will make a brief stop in Las Vegas on Friday to announce $8.2 billion in funding for 10 new passenger rail projects, a senior administration official said. The projects, funded by a $1 trillion infrastructure law, include $3 billion for the nation’s first high-speed rail line, which will run through California, according to a senior administration official.
Biden will also announce a $3 billion investment to help create another high-speed rail corridor between Las Vegas and South Carolina, along with money for projects in North Carolina, Virginia and Washington DC, the official said.

Biden has spent the past year criss-crossing the country announcing new funding tied to pieces of legislation he signed, the infrastructure law, the Chip and Science Act and the Inflation Reduction Act.
It’s part of an effort to boost his poll ratings and convince voters that he’s the right person to lead the US economy, but recent public opinion polls have shown that effort to be unsuccessful.
