WASHINGTON – President Biden told high school students on their first day of class Monday that he understands how difficult it is to come back after “not doing any work” – after he received criticism from Republicans for spending much of the past month on vacation.
“I tell you, the hardest thing, I think, is when you come back — what’s the matter, dear? You look at me like, ‘I don’t want to go to this math class’?” Biden told students at Eliot-Hine High School on Capitol Hill, stopping to call on a bachelor.
“The hardest thing,” the president continued, “is coming back after three months of not doing any work, not doing any homework, and suddenly you have a lot to do – everyone has a lot to catch up on from the end of last year.”
The 80-year-old president received a mixed reception at school, with one teenage girl excitedly shaking his hand and exclaiming, “I’m going to be famous!”
Another student sitting in the front row was less than enthusiastic, pulling the hoods of their sweatshirts over their heads and appearing to take a nap during Biden’s speech.

The students remained in that position until Biden walked around the room shaking hands and wagging his fingers in front of their faces to wake them up.
He whispered something to the sleepy student, whose gender was unclear to the reporter, and seemed to tap them on the cheek before moving around the room.
Biden returned on Saturday from a weeklong vacation in Lake Tahoe in Nevada at billionaire Tom Steyer’s beachside mansion.

Before his Lake Tahoe trip — from which he took a side trip on Aug. 21 to visit wildfire damage in Maui — Biden enjoyed R&R at both of his Delaware homes, staying at his Rehoboth Beach home and Wilmington residence from July 28 to Aug. 7, then returning to Rehoboth August 11-14.
The president is scheduled to hit the beach again on Friday for the long Labor Day weekend.
