Biden tells debunked Amtrak tale boasting his rail mileage for the 13th time, says it’s ‘not a joke’

President Biden on Friday shared for at least the 13th time since taking office a debunked story involving a late Amtrak conductor named Angelo Negri who allegedly shouted “Joey, honey!” while praising Biden’s lifelong train passenger.

Biden, 81, gave the latest version of the story — changing some details, including the specific mileage cited — while touting investment in rail infrastructure at an event in Las Vegas.

“I am the vice president… I am going home to see my mother. I took the 5 o’clock train that I used to take every day — the 7 o’clock train out of Washington,” Biden began.

“One of the senior guys at Amtrak… He came up to me — his name was Angelo — and he came up and said ‘Joey, honey!’ and held my cheek. I thought they were going to shoot him.

“And I said, ‘Brother, what’s the matter?’ He said, ‘We’re just – I’ve just read the newspaper’ – because they keep a careful mileage [of] how many miles did you use on a plane for the United States Air Force as vice president,” Biden continued

“‘I read in the paper, Joey, that you traveled… a million, two hundred thousand miles with the Air Force,'” Biden said, using a different figure than the millions of miles he more commonly mentions.

“He said, ‘Big -‘ I’ll quote him exactly. He said, ‘Big deal, Joey.’ He said, ‘We just had a retirement dinner in Newark, New Jersey… You know how many miles you’ve driven?’ I said, ‘No, Ang.’ And he said, ‘1,000,327 miles. I haven’t heard of the Air Force anymore.’ Well, folks, I — I’m a train man, no joke.”

Biden’s personal daily schedule as vice president included a note about how many Air Force miles he had logged, allowing verification.

Biden is seeking a second four-year term in next year’s election despite public concerns about his mental acuity.

A New York Times poll last month found 71% of swing state voters believe Biden is “too old to be an effective president,” compared to 39% who said the same about former President Donald Trump, 77, who is seeking a rematch against Biden.

Biden also has a decades-long penchant for embellishing personal stories and was forced to withdraw from his first presidential bid in 1987 due to plagiarism of speeches, law school papers and exaggerations about his academic record.
