Biden tells Democratic donors ‘I’m not sure I’d be running’ in 2024 if Trump was out: ‘We cannot let him win’

President Biden said Tuesday that he may retire after one term if former President Donald Trump does not run in next year’s election.

“If Trump didn’t run, I’m not sure I would,” the 81-year-old president told a group of Democratic donors in Boston. “But we can’t let him win.”

The statement at the fundraiser was a stunning self-assessment of the implications of Biden’s age.

Biden is already the oldest president and will be 86 if he completes a full second term in January 2029.

Critics routinely highlight instances where Biden appears confused or shares false memories — and several polls this year have found that about two-thirds of voters worry about Biden’s mental acuity.

Trump, 77, is the frontrunner for the Republican nomination and polls show him beating Biden due in large part to economic pessimism linked to inflation and high interest rates.

The RealClearPolitics national polling average shows Trump with 46.7% support and Biden at 44.7%.

A poll of swing states released last month by the New York Times found Trump also ahead in battleground states including Arizona, Georgia and Pennsylvania.

Although Trump has the upper hand, he will be tried in four criminal cases in the coming months, which is expected to have an impact on the campaign.

Trump’s first trial is scheduled to begin in March in Washington on federal charges of illegally trying to reverse his 2020 election loss. Later that month, he arrives in Manhattan for a trial on charges of falsifying business records related to hush money payments during the 2016 campaign.

Trump’s federal trial for alleged mishandling of national security documents is scheduled to begin in May in Miami and his trial on state charges linked to challenging the Georgia election results has been tentatively set for August.

Biden also faces variables — such as the possibility that the House of Representatives will indict him on corruption charges linked to his son Hunter Biden’s and brother James Biden’s dealings in countries such as China and Ukraine.

A successful impeachment vote would put a rare blemish on Biden’s record and make him the fourth president in US history to be impeached, joining Trump, Bill Clinton and Andrew Johnson.

Biden will almost certainly be acquitted by the Democratic-controlled Senate, but his trial in the upper chamber will feature the public airing of evidence that could undermine his position.

A poll released in October by The Associated Press found that 68% of the public already believed that Biden acted illegally or unethically with his son’s business, including 40% of Democrats.

Hunter Biden, 53, also faces trial on federal firearms charges in Delaware and a Los Angeles grand jury is considering possible federal tax charges that could implicate his father, especially if the first son is indicted on alleged violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act as a result of introducing associates to his father and other Obama-Biden administration figures.
