President Biden offered a gentle echo of his tirade against former president Donald Trump as he marked the anniversary of the 2021 Capitol riots on social media Saturday.
“Three years ago, a violent mob fueled by lies attacked the US Capitol,” Biden write on X. “Our democracy is being tested. But it survives because We the People have won.”
The post came a day after Biden sought to boost his re-election bid by branding Trump a “loser” who speaks “the same language used in Nazi Germany” in a scorched-earth speech that named January 6, 2021 as “the day we almost lost America.”
But on Saturday, Biden avoided extreme rhetoric — saying only that “American democracy” is a “promise that must be kept.”
Inside almost the same position which he repeated in a speech in South Carolina, Vice President Kamala Harris recalled “a mob” that “stormed the United States Capitol” with “brutal violence and fear.”
Biden’s fiery speech on Friday blamed Trump and Republicans for an “assault on democracy.” Biden’s ZUMAPRESS.com post on his Jan. 6 birthday struck a more muted tone. Meanwhile, Republicans blasted their opponents for hyping the third anniversary of the riots for political gain.
“Happy Fake Rebellion Day!!!” Donald Trump Jr. snapped at X. “The first rebellion with armed tour guides and unarmed participants!”
In Iowa, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis scolded Biden for “saying people who support Trump are basically enemies of the country.”
“Biden had an opportunity to be a unifier for this country and he failed,” DeSantis told Fox News. “He’s picked sides every step of the way … waving that bloody shirt and trying to disenfranchise tens of millions of Americans.”

Trump himself, at a rally in Newton, Iowa, denounced Biden’s speech as “absurd.”
“He cannot talk about any of the things he has done. He didn’t have success,” Trump said at Des Moines Area Community College.
“All he can talk about is that we are a threat to democracy,” the former president lamented. “But he is a threat to democracy … a complete and utter failure as president, and everybody knows it.”
Trump has been criminally charged with obstruction, conspiracy against civil rights, and conspiracy to defraud the US government — but not with participating in an insurgency — in connection with the January 6 Capitol riots and after the 2020 election.
