Cobbs began his career as a radar technician. He spent nearly eight years in the United States Air Force. He also worked in IBM’s office products division. He also worked as a car salesman in Cleveland. He came to New York to pursue an acting profession when he was 35 or 36 years old. In his early days in New York, he supported himself by driving taxis, fixing office equipment, selling toys and other odd jobs. Cobb began his acting career performing at the African American Performing Arts Center. Similarly, he appeared at the Karamu House Theater in Cleveland, Ohio. His first professional performance was in Ride a Black Horse at the Negro Ensemble Company.
He later performed in local theater shows, street theater, regional theater, and at the Eugene O’Neill Theater. His first appearance on TV was in the 1976 New York public television teaching program Vegetable Soup. Likewise with his first film, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, released in 1974.
