Bill Maher Alleges COVID-19 Safety Concerns Led To Fatal ‘Rust’ Shooting

Comedian Bill Maher claims that the COVID-19 safety protocol is what ultimately caused actor Alec Baldwin to misfire the gun that hit cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and director Joel Souza on October 21, 2021, on the set of the Western film “Rust.”

Baldwin and “Rust” shield Hannah Gutierrez-Reed have been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter while first assistant director David Halls pleaded guilty to a charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon.

While Baldwin, the producer of “Rust,” and several other individuals and entities face civil lawsuits in the shooting, Bill Maher placed the blame on COVID-19 safety protocols for the fatal shooting.

On the Sunday edition of his podcast, Club Random, Bill Maher interviewed TMZ founder Harvey Levin (as per the Daily Mail). Levin said that the “Alec Baldwin case” is BS, calling it a “ridiculous prosecution where they just grabbed the headlines.”

After Levin called the criminal charges “outrageous,” Maher said, “We almost always agree, that’s great. And I say the same. I mean, like, I’m just going to put it this way. Do you think Alec Baldwin shot this cinematographer on purpose? If not, then what are we talking about?”

Maher later insisted that the fatal shooting “isn’t the same thing as being drunk, where you’re at fault.” Levin agreed, noting that the armorer responsible for loading the gun with live ammunition should focus on the offense.

However, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed’s lawyer Jason Bowles previously claimed that he did not check the gun on the day of the fatal shooting. She claimed that David Halls told her that he would come and get her when they were ready to film; however, he did not.

Bill Maher Claims There’s More Concern Over ‘Covid Masks’ Than Gun Safety

The 67-year-old comedian went on to blame COVID-19 safety protocols for the fatal shooting. “What I think is happening is that they are very concerned about the use of the COVID-19 mask. That’s my theory,” he said before admitting, “I just pulled this from a-but it might be true. I think, you know, everybody, it’s typical of how America reacts to everything – wrong.”

“You know, always afraid of the wrong thing, and they can be so apoplectic about all the COVID,” he continued. “And this germ on their set that they… therefore forgot about bullets and guns.”

“I mean, if I were to rewrite this as a play, that’s what I would do, to make that point about what I think America does when it’s faced with a crisis,” he added.

However, the shield they originally wanted for the job recently came forward with a different theory about what really happened on the “Rust” set.

Hollywood Armorer Claims Producers Hired Armorers With Less Experience ‘To Save a Few Cents’

Although Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was eventually hired by the “Rust” production team, armorer Scott Rasmussen, who has worked in the industry since the 1980s, told KRQE News that she was initially chosen to work as an armorer on the movie set.

The Hollywood armorer and prop master has worked with many Hollywood stars over the decades, including Sam Elliot, John Travolta, and Eric Roberts. He was initially asked to take on both the role of prop and armor master, but he had concerns about how many guns would be present on set.

“I felt comfortable doing it until I read the script and it was a lot of guns everywhere throughout the show,” he told a local news affiliate. “So I think it’s safer for me to just be a shield in the show.”

Rasmussen claimed that the producers were okay with that and told him that they would get back to him. Instead, he says they ghosted him and later found out they hired Gutierrez-Reed, who had less experience, to take both jobs.

“I wholeheartedly believe they saw that I had that experience so they probably assumed that I wanted an arm and a leg and so, they went with someone they could get relatively cheap,” he said, adding, “They decided to save a few cents here and there and we, unfortunately, had a terrible accident.”
