Bill Maher claims ‘pretty famous’ celebrity yelled at him in email over hosting Republicans on his show

“Real Time” host Bill Maher said he received flak from “somewhat famous” people for welcoming Republicans on his HBO show.

In an interview published Monday by Reason Magazine, Maher was asked how often he was accused of “platforming,” a growing sin among the left of allowing conservatives on mainstream liberal platforms.

“I have [Ron] DeSantis and Ted Cruz this year, and Bill Barr. And yes, to answer your question, I can think of two people—and I won’t say who they are; one of them is pretty famous—just yelled at me in an email about it,” Maher said. “And my answer to that is: F— off. Do you know? You live in your ivory tower. me will talk to everyone in half the country you find so sad. They will not expel themselves, even if they are miserable. And some of them are! And some on the left are also sad, and very annoying. That’s the country!”

He continued, “When historians look back in a hundred years, if we were still here, I don’t think they would have divided the country like we did into these two camps. They will say: As a many people, they are annoying. It occurs in different forms on both sides. As people, they do not believe in science. On the right, they think global warming is a hoax or whatever nonsense they believe about it. And on the left, they think men can have babies. That’s what they will say. They’ll say, ‘As a people, they’ve just lost their s—.’”

Last September, Maher voiced his wishes to then-Republican presidential candidate Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis over his uphill battle to defeat former President Trump in the GOP primary.

“You didn’t take my advice,” Maher began the exchange. “I was at the show – a few times we talked – I said, ‘this guy’s running crazy this time.’ … You can compete for the next 20 years. If you’re Biden, 40 is next. Why run against Trump? You’re trying to clog this needle that’s not going to happen. You cannot reject it because that is the basis, yet you are against it. And that’s why, I mean, let’s face it Ron, if the campaign had gone well, you wouldn’t be on this show.”

Maher doesn’t just welcome Republicans on his HBO show. He also invited conservatives on his “Club Random” podcast, including former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.

The liberal comedian called Ramaswamy “a likable guy” but insisted his friendliness with Trump would prevent him from winning the Republican nomination.

“You need to separate yourself from Donald Trump. That’s the way,” Maher told Ramaswamy.

Both DeSantis and Ramaswamy have suspended their campaigns following disappointing results in the Iowa caucuses.

Maher, an outspoken critic of Trump, warned Democrats last week that they cannot run against him to win the November election.

“I also think it’s not a good strategy to run a Democratic campaign based on ‘How can they like this guy?!’ Because some people just do it… Maybe it’s better to see why he won among people who are ‘rapists. And who does the drugs,’” Maher said, brushing aside his Trump impersonation. “Maybe there’s a fly in the ointment there.”
