“Real Time” host Bill Maher blasted prominent Democrats he accused of running a “shadow campaign” while offering praise to Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., who officially launched the primary challenge to President Biden.
Maher praised Phillips’ participation in last week’s Democratic primary and while he insisted the candidate did not necessarily endorse him, he told 2024 he hoped he “could” end up supporting him.
“I support the idea,” Maher said Friday, “because I did an editorial a few weeks ago on the phone [Biden] Ruth Bader Biden. And see, we both struggle with the same thing. We love Joe Biden, don’t we? And we think he has done a good job. Ruth Bader Ginsburg does a good job and doesn’t know when to stop, and that’s why you’re here.”
“And it’s not like anyone else is doing this in — sort of — a shadow campaign,” Maher said later. “I mean, Gavin Newsom, our governor, seems to be all over the world.”
“I see that,” Phillips smiled.
“You know, they’re going to go to the battleground state behind closed doors — they really do, but I think at least you’re honest, and you say, ‘No, I’m going to do it.’ Just do it.”

Phillips, who has been vocal in encouraging other Democrats to enter the primary, pointed out how there are “21 of us on the ballot in New Hampshire,” telling Maher all it takes is a $1,000 check and a 35-year-old, US-born Citizen to “run for president in America Company.”
He also mentioned how in his failed attempt to recruit another formidable challenger, he tried to control Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who he said would make a “brilliant president.”
“And he’s one of those people running a shadow campaign,” Maher interjected.

“Everyone is waiting until 2028,” Phillips said. “And I’m making the point to all of you tonight that I’m not sure that we’re going to have the 2028 election the way we expect it to be if the inevitable happens and it’s President Biden against Donald Trump. I mean, that number surprised everyone. If we don’t start acknowledging that – there’s this strange and very dangerous culture of silence in Washington, among certain political-industrial complex, that’s dangerous – I mean, dangerous. And we wear blindfolds. It will make 2016 look like an exciting year.”
After Maher offered praise to Newsom, who he said needs to “move to the center,” and Vice President Kamala Harris, who has worse polling numbers than Biden, Phillips repeated “the more the merrier” as far as Biden’s challengers go.
“It is not too late to join this race. I wish we had more competition instead of coordination. It’s not that difficult, and I don’t understand why people hesitate to do something that the country desperately needs,” Phillips said. “I called the candidate who I said was closer to the race. They won’t take my calls. They asked their politicians to take the call. They asked me not to use their names. You know, when I say that most of my colleagues talk about this every day in hushed tones in the corridors, it says the quiet part loudly.”

Maher, previously a longtime Biden defender, began expressing his doubts about the president’s chances in the 2024 election during a “Club Random” sit-down with Democratic strategist James Carville, who also sounded the alarm based on recent polls.
“I think we’re on the same page as Biden,” said Maher. “Doing a great service, but in 2020, maybe he’s the only one who can beat Trump, I think right now he’s the only one who’s going to lose to him.”
“He did great not just because he beat Trump, but, you know, a lot of things that he did — Afghanistan, Ukraine that he handled right, other people’s economies were worse than ours after the pandemic. These are some pretty big things,” he continued. “But he will lose because at some point, perception becomes reality. And look, do I think he can do the job? exactly. Government, as you know better than anyone, is done in small rooms like the Oval Office, where people talk quietly and decisions are made. I think he can still do well. He cannot run for president. He will look bad in the debate… I think, will lose.”
