“Real Time” host Bill Maher on Friday took a moment to knock former President Obama for comments he made this week about the Israel-Hamas war, saying he was “disappointed” in leading Democrats.
During a discussion with Pod Save America, the 44th president insisted “we are all complicit” in the escalating violence that has erupted in the Middle East following the Oct. 7 attack on Israel.
“What Hamas is doing is terrible, and there is no justification for it. And what is true is that the occupation, and what is happening to the Palestinian people, is intolerable,” Obama said. “If you want to solve a problem, then you have to accept the whole truth. And then you have to admit that no one is clean, that we are all complicit on some level.”
On Friday, Maher accused Obama of rejecting “moral equivalence” between the Jewish State and Palestinian terror groups.
“I must say I still struggle with the moral equation of people,” Maher said during the panel discussion. “I mean, Barack Obama, who rarely disappoints me, did that this week… The statement, I mean, it’s not a terrible statement, but he said, ‘If you want to solve the problem, then you have to accept the statement. the whole truth and then you have to admit nobody’s hands are clean.’ Literally, that’s true, of course. But just giving two examples where this I don’t think is a useful statement at this time. First of all, the attack was only a month ago. A more violent attack than we’ve ever seen in reverse. There is a big difference between collateral damage and what Hamas did.”

He continued, “Secondly, the Israelis are now in a four-hour pause for people to leave. So people say ‘oh, wow, how big they are.’ Ok, but it’s a war started by the other side! It is very interesting. When they opened fire [at] Israel. It is a war. When Israel returned fire, it was a war crime. A little crazy… Also, will Hamas do it? Will they give a four hour break? No, don’t stop for a second.”
“And then Israel’s heritage minister was asked in an interview about the use of nuclear weapons in Gaza. And he said ‘that’s one of the possibilities.’ He was fired, not allowed in any more Cabinet meetings, not denied by the Prime Minister. Will that happen in reverse? So enough with moral equality, please,” he added.
The HBO star reminded the panel not to forget the “Islamic fanatic” side of Hamas “because you shouldn’t talk about that anymore because if you do, even if it’s realistic, it becomes Islamophobic.”

“But it’s true!” shouted Maher. “Those in Hamas who kill their own people think they are helping them because they are martyrs. That’s a different situation that Israel has to deal with that most people don’t.”
He also denounced an open letter signed by more than 750 journalists urging newsrooms to accept terms like “apartheid” and “genocide” to describe Israel’s treatment of Palestinians.
“They couldn’t be more pro-Hamas,” Maher said. “They say they want newsrooms to use words like ‘apartheid.’ I hear it all the time anyway, It’s wrong. And I heard ‘massacre.’ Again, wrong. Israel is not trying to commit genocide. The other side – openly said we want to commit genocide on you.”
