Bill Maher slams ‘partisan’ ‘Family Guy’ creator Seth MacFarlane for saying he’s doing ‘exactly what Donald Trump wants’

“Real Time” host Bill Maher had a tense exchange with “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane over media trustworthiness, with MacFarlane becoming more trusting of news organizations.

While discussing the toxicity of social media, MacFarlane began by criticizing the comments section of news sites, citing The New York Times as an example where readers’ reactions to articles were “radicalized one way or another.”

“It’s like these reporters take time to research this, fact-checking, oversight from editors,” MacFarlane said. “And if they get it wrong, then they have to print a retraction.”

“Or it’s just slanted,” Maher chimed in. “What if it’s just skewed? What if it’s not wrong, it’s just skewed? That’s what someone pointed out in [comments].”

“Then write to the editor!” MacFarlane exclaimed. “Do your research, and formulate your argument.”

“But that came up a week later,” Maher replied. “By that time, I would have forgotten about it, or I wouldn’t have seen it.”

Producers of “Ted” continue to insist “we take it for granted” when journalists’ work is put on the “same shelf” as “the cow that stimulates everyone else—.”

“You seem to trust reporters more than I do,” Maher said.

“I believe certain reporters, yes,” MacFarlane replied.

“The specifics I do, not much,” Maher replied.

“Not much?” a shocked MacFarlane asked.

“No,” Maher doubled down. “Everything I read, whatever the source, it’s only half the truth. They print the narrative. They don’t print the truth.”

“That’s a generalization, isn’t it?” MacFarlane followed.

“Well, it’s because it’s generally true,” Maher said, prompting laughter and applause from the audience. “They’re printing the side of the story that-“

“By the way, that’s what Donald Trump wants… ‘Don’t trust reporters. Don’t trust reporters,’” MacFarlane interjected.

“Well, Hitler was a vegetarian. Doesn’t mean I like Donald Trump,” Maher dismissed. “They print half of what they want which will make people like you a partisan, very partisan, you want to read something that ‘Oh, that makes me feel good.'”

“I read John Bolton’s book, for f–k’s sake. I’m not partisan,” quipped MacFarlane.

Fellow panelist, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., went on to tell Maher that people “watch the news they want to hear to reinforce the views they already have.”

“They are in the business of teasing the audience. That’s what the media does,” added Maher.
